KOSC Scholarship Program

ATTENTION SPOUSES!
The KOSC Scholarship program is EXTENDING its deadline for spouses who wish to apply!

Due to the sudden halt that the Pentagon has placed on the Military Spouse Career Advancement Accounts (MyCCA), we would like to extend the deadline until March 31st. All of the requirements remain the same. We look forward to your submissions. Pick up an application at the Kadena Gift Corner or download here. 2010 KADENA OSC Scholarship Application (MS Word.doc)

The KOSC Scholarship Committee would like to thank all of the 2010 scholarship applicants. The applications are being processed and a panel of independent judges will determine the scholarship recipients in April.

Scholarship recipients will be notified by May 1st. The KOSC Membership will honor the 2010 scholarship recipients during an awards dinner on Thursday 20 May 2010, 6:30 pm, at the O’Club.

SCHOLARSHIP PURPOSE:
The purpose of the KOSC Scholarship Program is to acknowledge outstanding military dependents of any rank within the Kadena AB community by offering financial assistance towards education in any field of their choice.  In previous years, the KOSC has been honored to provide numerous merit based scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $3,500.  In the past two years, the KOSC assisted high school seniors and dependent spouses furthering their education by awarding 39 scholarships totaling $68,500.

ELIGIBILITY:
Scholarship applicants will meet the following criteria:

1. Be a Graduating high school senior or Dependent spouse

2. Seeking an undergraduate or graduate degree at an accredited vocational, two or four year college or university

3. Have current Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) status

4. Be a dependent of a sponsor who is one of the following:

a. Active duty or Retired U.S. Air Force personnel of Any Rank

b. U.S. Military, civilian, and DoDDS personnel assigned to, or living on, Kadena AB

c. OR be an existing KOSC member or their unmarried child

5. Have a minimum 3.0 GPA in high school or college credits

6. Have NOT been awarded a KOSC scholarship in the past

7. Be available for an interview by the panel of judges on Saturday, April 24, 2010. Unfortunately, if you are not available on this date you cannot be interviewed and thus are not eligible for the scholarship.

Factors considered in selection include scholastic achievement, extracurricular activities, community service, job or volunteer work experience, evidence of leadership ability, educational and career goals, composition skills and interviewing skills (the top finalists for the scholarships will be interviewed by a panel of judges).  This scholarship will be awarded without regard to gender, race, or creed of applicant, school attending, rate or rank of sponsor, or financial status.

POLICIES:
1. The KOSC Scholarship Committee determines the number of scholarships and the monetary value of each scholarship based on available funds, the number of applicants, and the analysis of applicant composite scores.  Submission of an application does not guarantee a scholarship.  The total amount awarded varies from year to year depending upon the amount of funds the KOSC has raised.

2. All applications are scored by an independent panel of judges from various base organizations.  Complete anonymity of applicants will be preserved during the selection process and applicant names will be withheld during the interview process.  Judges and their family members are ineligible for scholarships.

3. KOSC Scholarship Committee members and their dependents are ineligible for scholarships.

4. Incomplete applications will not be considered.  Failure to follow all directions can result in disqualification.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS:

1. A complete application must include the following:
• Completed application cover sheet with signed statements of applicant and sponsor

• Typed Resume Cover Letter (Part I).

• Typed Resume (limited to 1 to 2 pages in length using 12-point font) (Part II)

OFFICIAL school transcript from the last school you attended.  If you have not yet attended college or if you have accrued less than 12 college credit   hours, you must submit your official high school transcript and the most recent official college transcript. Unofficial transcripts (those that do not have the official school seal or are opened) will not be accepted.

2. DO NOT include your name or identifying comments on your cover letter or resume or your application will not be accepted.  The application sheet is the only place you may disclose your name.

3. Ensure that the application cover sheet is completely filled out.

4. The application will be accepted as complete and valid ONLY when ALL of the required documents are submitted in a single envelope (DO NOT staple any of the documents together).  Incomplete applications will not be accepted.
