Japan has the world's third-largest economy by nominal GDP and by purchasing power parity. It is also the world's fourth largest exporter and fourth largest importer. Although Japan has officially renounced its right to declare war, it maintains a modern military force in self-defense and peacekeeping roles
A Message from our President
Where is Okinawa?
Okinawa Prefecture ( Japanese: Okinawa-ken?, Okinawan: Uchinaa-ken) is one of Japan's southern prefectures, and consists of hundreds of the Ryukyu Islands in a chain over 1,000 km long, which extends southwest from Kyūshū (the southwesternmost of Japan's main four islands) to Taiwan. Okinawa's capital, Naha, is located in the southern part of the largest and most populous island, Okinawa Island which is approximately half-way between Kyūshū and Taiwan. The disputed Senkaku Islands (Mandarin: Diaoyu Islands) are also administered as part of Okinawa Prefecture at present.
Battle of Okinawa
Children carrying children during the Battle of Okinawa, codenamed Operation Iceberg, was fought on the Ryukyu Islands of Okinawa and was the largest amphibious assault in the Pacific War of WW II. 82-day long battle lasted from early April until mid-June, 1945.
Kadena Officers' Spouses' Club
The Kadena Officers' Spouses' Club (KOSC) is an organization committed to promoting volunteerism and service to society by fostering relationships with the Okinawan community through charitable contributions promoting friendship.
The KOSC raises funds by operating the Kadena Gift Corner, which is primarily run by volunteers. The KOSC is a member of the American Women's Welfare Association (AWWA) through which the majority of charitable funds are distributed to both American and Japanese charities.
Dear New Member,
Mensori or Welcome to the Kadena Officers Spouses Club (KOSC)! Thank you for choosing to be a part of this fantastic organization. Your membership will allow you to make a real difference in the community, as well as make new friends and participate in some exciting activities.
The KOSC, with help from our amazing volunteers, operates the KOSC Gift Corner. The proceeds from our gift corner allow us to act as ambassadors to our Okinawan neighbors and the U.S. military community. In the past, we donated funding to a host of military and school organizations and last year we gave just over $30,000 in scholarships to graduating students and spouses to pursue higher education. Weve donated money to our Okinawan neighbors to buy wheelchair lifts, oxygen equipment and necessities for orphanages. We could not be this generous without the help of our gift corner patrons and volunteers. If you are interested in volunteering, please stop by the Kadena Gift Corner to fill out an application, or visit the website at www.kadenagiftcorner.com for more information.
In addition, to our numerous charitable avenues, the KOSC is also a wonderful opportunity to meet new people, learn a new hobby or perfect an old one. I hope you will take advantage of the many activities we have including: bowling, crud, bunko, book club and dive club; to name a few. You can find out more information on these activities by visiting our website at www.kadenaosc.org .
We look forward to getting to know you in the year ahead. Once again, Welcome!
Sincerely,
Karla M. Smith

AWWA
For over thirty years the American Women’s Welfare Association (AWWA) has forged a vital link between American military families and their Okinawan neighbors. Founded by U.S. Forces wives’ clubs during Okinawa’s reversion from a U.S. territory to a Japanese prefecture, AWWA has been quietly fostering a relationship with the Okinawan community through charitable contributions, friendship, and community involvement.
AWWA offers a way for its member organizations to coordinate and consolidate their resources, providing the maximum positive impact on our community. On the fourth Wednesday of each month, representatives of AWWA’s member clubs meet to evaluate requests for donations and to pledge funds to local Japanese welfare facilities and American organizations.
In the last ten years alone, AWWA has contributed nearly $3,500,000 to over 100 Japanese and American organizations combined. These funds have been used to purchase everything from handicapped- accessible vehicles, to agricultural equipment, to baby blankets, to even an ultrasound machine. AWWA helps make a difference in the lives of the elderly, the physically and mentally challenged, and the children of Okinawa.
AWWA member organizations raise funds by running different gift shops, thrift shops, and by hosting a myriad of other events, including golf tournaments and art auctions. If you are interested in contributing to AWWA, simply visit one or more of the gift or thrift shops, purchase an item, and become a patron of worthy American or Japanese organizations in need. Better yet, volunteer at your favorite gift or thrift shop and help generate the charitable funds that flow to worthy organizations!
